While we have sanitized death into something that happens elsewhere—in hospitals, nursing homes, funeral parlors—we have inadvertently left children unprepared for one of life’s most universal experiences. As a parent to a death-curious four-year-old who loves visiting cemeteries, Anita argues that speaking thoughtfully with kids about our shared mortality may equip them with the tools and frameworks to navigate life’s unavoidable losses.]]></video:description>

Concepts of dignity, suffering, and mercy are largely absent from conversations with people who are seriously ill, yet they are the heartbeat of decisions about living and dying well. In this session, we discuss the concept of ambiguous loss and the challenges of caring for loved ones who are physically present and psychologically absent. We explore the often-unrecognized role of being a family caregiver, the unique experiences of those who care for and love people who have dementia, and resources that are available to support this often difficult and emotional journey. <video:description><![CDATA[It is said that for every suicide, 135 people are affected, creating a continuum of people affected whether long-term or simply by being exposed to the knowledge of the traumatic event. Grief and mourning for those impacted by suicide have unique reactions due to the coexistence of trauma, the increased stigmatization and risk factors that can arise, and other such nuances.
We invite you to come learn about these variables as well as what helpful and lasting actions you can take to support those bereaved by suicide.

In this session, you will be introduced to expressive arts and art therapy and their potential as a resource to support each person’s unique grieving process.

Dr. Carlock provides a brief overview of art therapy and some situations when seeking out a professional art therapist would be indicated. She covers some general ways individuals can utilize creativity and personal art expression on their own, as a therapeutic tool. This type of creative expression is accessible to anyone because there’s no training in fine arts needed. The focus is on self-expression and how the process of engaging in a creative activity helps the body and mind rather than striving for aesthetic goals. <video:description><![CDATA[Speaking Grief explores the transformative experience of losing a family member in a death and grief-avoidant society. The documentary features diverse representations of grief through candid interviews with seven families from across the country whose losses range from stillbirth to suicide. Moving away from the idea that grief is a problem that needs to be “fixed,” the documentary validates grief as a normal, healthy part of the human experience. Speaking Grief also addresses the role support from friends and family plays in a person’s grief experience, introducing ideas for how we can get better at showing up for people in their darkest moments.

<video:description><![CDATA[Psychedelics such as psilocybin have been shown to improve emotional wellbeing and help people change perspectives on challenging life realities. This session will explore the possible benefits that psychedelics can offer people nearing end-of-life to treat anxiety and other psychological symptoms. Mariavittoria Mangini will discuss the way psychedelics may be useful in existential distress at the end of life by changing obsessive, intrusive fear of death to a more nuanced consideration of what death means and represents. She will also share past and current research, and consider questions such as:

1) How are we facing death and illness in the age of COVID? What is the current state of death in the culture at large?
2) How will an individual experience of facing death be shifted when psychedelic therapy becomes widely available?
3) How would a society that embraces psychedelic experiences approach death and dying?

Katja Allen will join the conversation to share her research in a field outside of end-of-life care entitled, “Psilocybin for the Treatment of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.”

<video:description><![CDATA[As LGBTQI+ people age and need supportive services to meet their aging goals, many of them question whether it is safe to share that they are LGBTQI+ due to stigma they have witnessed and experienced over their lifetimes.

When planning for end-of-life care, it is crucial to ensure LGBTQI+ people feel they can come out and be their authentic selves so that we can meet their unique needs.

Visibility Matters is a training for our community’s aging care providers, formal and informal, to ensure that older LGBTQI+ adults receive aging-related services that are welcoming, respectful, and safe for them. This session helps aging care professionals and volunteers become more informed, sensitive to, and supportive of the needs of LGBTQI+ older adults and their families.

<video:description><![CDATA[How has the pandemic upended the lives and autonomy of nursing home residents?

Journalist and author Ann Neumann spent March and April of 2020 in Philadelphia, a city with one of the oldest, low-income communities of color in the country, reporting on systemic problems within the nursing home industry. Then Covid struck the facilities she had visited. What Neumann found was that the very same chronic problems that residents and experts had identified before the pandemic were the direct cause of the tragic number of deaths that took place across the country: the bouncing of patients from one facility to another because of payment rates; tragically low staffing; and business fraud.

During her presentation, Neumann will talk about the history of the industry's challenges, advocates' decades-long efforts to improve them, the unauthorized use of hydroxychloroquine in the early days of Covid, and the effects on elders who depend on these facilities for their care before, during, and after the pandemic.]]></video:description>

<video:title><![CDATA[What Death Doulas Do and Don't Do(ula)]]></video:title>
<video:description><![CDATA[The terms "death doula" and "death midwife" may be new, but the role isn't. Before death became a highly medicalized event from which most of us are removed, it was normal to have someone there to support the dying person and their loved ones through the process. This role has been making a resurgence over the past five or so years but given how removed most of us are from the dying process, there is confusion about what exactly a death doula does and does not do and how they can fit in with other end-of-life providers. This presentation helps to explain what training for a death doula may cover and what services they can and cannot offer.

The talk features Randy's stunning photography and audio recordings of the people that knew and loved him. Zander takes viewers through the creative processes of collecting, writing, and grieving, with the goal of helping others to find ways of sharing their own grief stories. <video:description><![CDATA[Due to the remarkable advances in medical care, we are living longer. But aging is commonly accompanied by illness, and people are living with slowly progressive serious illness. Unfortunately, many are unprepared for the final stages of life. Relatively few have had in-depth discussions with their physicians about their prognosis and goals of care. We must encourage far better end-of-life care to include early palliative care referrals; facilitation of end-of-life care conversations between patients, their families, and healthcare providers; completion of advance care directives; discussions and documentation of patients’ wishes, goals and values; and a meaningful shared decision-making process which includes a discussion of the end-of-life care options available.]]></video:description>

<video:title><![CDATA[Re Membering Through Ritual]]></video:title>
<video:description><![CDATA[Candi K. Cann kicks off the 2025 season of Roots & Roads’ series Ritual and Remembrance by highlighting various rituals and practices surrounding grief around the world. From food rituals to embodied practices honoring the dead, Cann argues that all losses should be honored, and points to grief practices as a successful example of reinserting the dead into memory construction. Utilizing continuing bonds theory, Cann argues that it is important to continue our relationship with the dead, re-membering them through ritual, and allowing the dead to find a place in life after loss.
