Gila Silverman is the Education Program Manager at Shomer Collective, an organization dedicated to talking about death, Jewishly. She holds a PhD in Anthropology and a Master’s in Public Health, both from the University of Arizona, and a certificate in Congregational Health Ministry from Andover Newton Theological School. Much of Gila’s academic and communal work has focused on the intersections of religion, spirituality, health and healing, exploring the diverse ways that we find meaning in Jewish tradition and ritual, particularly at times of illness and loss. She has published both ethnographic and personal writings on death and mourning, including, most recently, in the New York Times “Tiny Love Stories” column. She also co-edited a special issue on Anthropology and Grief, in the journal Death Studies. In her current position, Gila leads the Shomer Collective Educator Fellowship, an online program exploring the integration of conversations about death and dying into Jewish educational spaces. She also runs public and professional trainings about end-of-life issues, through the lens of Jewish wisdom.
